Colombia Santa Barbara

Milk Chocolate, Vanilla, Pine

The Santa Barbara Estate is located in the southwest section of the Department of Antioquia. Don Pedro Echavarria established the Santa Barbara Estate almost three decades ago with the vision of producing and offering to the world a superior quality Colombian coffee. This vision is proudly shared by all in the Santa Barbara Estate family. The Santa Barbara Estate is one of the few completely integrated coffee farms in Colombia, which ensures traceability and close quality control from the cherry on the tree until the moment that the coffee arrives at your door.

For many years this region suffered from the violence generated by the guerrillas and the narcotics wars; now Antioquia is trying to turn the page and write a new chapter for their future while creating a legacy for their country shown by the love and devotion behind their work. Quite simply, they want to put the Santa Barbara Estate name and the Antioquia region as a whole, back on the map.

Today, Santa Barbara Estate is composed of 5 sister farms that lie across three neighbouring geographical regions – Santa Barbara, Fredonia and Amagá. Loma Verde, currently run by Pedro Echavarria and his son (also known as Pedro), is the one of the largest of the five farms under the estate, contributing about 17% of the total coffee production annually. The coffee from Agualinda is referred to as Santa Barbara, as it comprises of a collective effort from all the sister farms under the estate.

Santa Barbara Estate employs 60 people all year round, who earn 30% above the minimum wage. Half of these staff also receive free lodging at the farm for themselves and their families. When the main harvest season arrives, an additional 1200 pickers are hired.  In addition, the estate also runs an extensive scholarship program for the worker’s children, as well as helping workers acquire their very own piece of land upon retirement. These initiatives contribute to the sustainability of Santa Barbara Estate. In the current state of things, a sustainable business like this is what is highly needed to keep our coffee industry alive and thriving in the coming future.
