Uganda has traditionally been known as a producer of Robusta- an inferior quality species under the Coffea genus. The major reason Arabica was not being produced in many areas in Uganda in the first place was more a matter of infrastructure, history and knowledge than environment.

Some premium growing areas for delicious Arabica would be the slopes of Mt. Elgon in Uganda’s East (bordering Kenya) and on the slopes of Mount Rwenzori, known locally as the ‘mountains of the moon’, in the Northwest bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The name, Kawacom Sipi Falls Sustainable Project, hails from the local scenic landmark of Sipi Falls. This 3 phase waterfall plunges down the slopes of Mt Elgon. It was thought to be the highest mountain at one stage because of its gigantic base, which covers 3,500 square kilometers across Uganda and Kenya.

Raspberry, Chocolate, Red Wine   The Manjarabad region near Sakleshpur is where Tipu Sultan constructed a fort as a strategic defensive location as it commands the approach to the plateau beyond Sakleshpur from the coast. About 20 km from the Manjarabad Fort, lies the Goorghully Estate nestling at an elevation of 1040 meters. The estate was started by planters F G Faster, Margret Brook and others in 1940. The estate is divided into 3 divisions - the Goorghully & Soondhully division under the Hassan District and the Hoshully (Mudigere Taluk). While the estate grows Arabica and Robusta, it is best recognized for producing a delectable cup of Arabica coffee like the lot we have here. Goorghully is mixed estate with 40% area cultivated with Arabica and 60% with Robusta as well as Pepper, which is grown on the permanent / temporary shade trees as inter-crop in the coffee areas.   Roaster Notes: This is our first ever origin from India and it doesn't disappoint. It cups bold yet with bright acidity but well balanced with the overall character of the coffee - especially as an espresso. Then just at the very end, in the finish, you get a little bit of red wine, coming from it's complex red honey processing. This is a perfect candidate for something in the morning to go with your hearty breakfast.
